Fire Cupping Therapy in San Diego
Fire cupping is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that uses heat to create suction inside glass cups. As the cups gently lift the skin and muscle, deep-seated tension and stagnation are drawn toward the surface and fresh, oxygen-rich blood flows into the deeper layers of the muscle, helping tight, overworked areas release so your body can move more freely.
What is Fire Cupping?
Traditional Chinese Medicine for Deep Muscle Release
Fire cupping has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years to relieve pain and restore healthy circulation. A flame is briefly placed inside a glass cup to remove the air, then the cup is set on the skin, creating a vacuum seal. That suction lifts and decompresses the tissue underneath, which is why many people describe cupping as a deep-tissue massage in reverse: instead of pressing down into the muscle, the cups pull it up and open.
In Chinese medicine, pain and stiffness often point to stagnation, areas where blood and qi aren't moving freely. By drawing that stagnation to the surface, fire cupping helps break up trigger points, loosen tight fascia and soften scar tissue, supporting better range of motion and flexibility. At Nalu Healing Arts, every cupping session is tailored to where your body is holding tension and what you want to get back to doing.

Ready to Release the Tension You've Been Carrying?
When the same knot keeps coming back or your neck and shoulders never fully relax, more stretching usually isn't the answer. Fire cupping works from the inside out, lifting what's stuck and bringing fresh circulation where your body needs it most. Your path back to easier, freer movement starts here.
Cupping keeps working after you leave the table.
The suction from fire cupping brings blood and lymph to areas that have been tight and under-circulated. The marks it leaves signal to your body that the area needs attention, so it continues sending fresh blood and lymph there for as long as the marks are visible. That means your body keeps doing the work of releasing and repairing the muscle for days after your session.
Our clients often experience:
-
Looser, lighter-feeling muscles and less day-to-day stiffness
-
Improved range of motion and flexibility
-
Relief from stubborn knots and trigger points
-
Better circulation to tight, overworked tissue
-
Softer fascia and scar tissue over a series of sessions
-
A deep sense of relaxation as the body lets go of held tension
What to Expect During Your Visit

The Consultation
Every new patient session begins with a consultation with your provider. We'll talk about where you feel pain or tightness, what makes it better or worse and your health history, so your treatment can focus on the areas that need the most support.
The Treatment
Your provider briefly places a flame inside each glass cup, removes it and sets the cup on your skin. The flame never touches you. You'll feel a strong, warm pulling sensation as the cup grips the tissue, which most people find relieving rather than painful. Cups are typically left in place for several minutes while the muscle releases underneath.

Your Cupping Marks
Cupping usually leaves round marks that can range from light pink to deep purple, depending on how acute or chronic the tension is in that area. The darker the mark, the more chronic the stagnation. The marks are usually painless, aren't the same as bruises from an injury and typically fade within 7 to 10 days.

Fire Cupping Aftercare
Because cupping activates your circulation and lymphatic system, your body will be busy releasing muscles and clearing out stagnation for the rest of the day. To get the most from your treatment:
-
Hydrate. Drink plenty of water to help your body flush out what cupping brought to the surface.
-
Skip cold water on day one. Avoid submerging in cold water, like the ocean or a cold plunge.
-
Keep sweating light. If you plan to work out, try to do it before your session. If you exercise after, keep it to a light sweat.
-
Cover up. Protect the treated area from wind, cold and sun.
-
Avoid alcohol. Drinking the same day can dehydrate your muscles, leave you sore and make for a rough next morning.
Common Questions About Fire Cupping
What is fire cupping?
-
Fire cupping is a Traditional Chinese Medicine technique that uses a flame to create suction inside glass cups. The suction lifts the skin and muscle, drawing stagnation to the surface and bringing oxygen-rich blood to the deeper layers of the muscle to relieve tension, trigger points and tight fascia.
How is fire cupping different from other types of cupping?
-
Many cupping styles use silicone or plastic cups with a pump. Fire cupping uses heat to create the vacuum in glass cups, which creates a warm, deep, steady suction and is the traditional method used in Chinese medicine.
Does fire cupping hurt?
-
Most people feel a strong pulling or tight sensation rather than pain. Your provider adjusts the suction to your comfort level, and many clients find the session deeply relaxing.
Why does cupping leave marks, and how long do they last?
-
The suction draws blood and stagnation up toward the surface, which shows as round marks. Their color reflects how chronic the tension is in that area, with darker marks indicating more long-standing stagnation. They're usually painless and fade within 7 to 10 days.
Will the flame touch my skin?
-
No. The flame is placed inside the cup only for a moment to remove the air and is taken away before the cup touches your skin.
What should I do after fire cupping?
-
Drink plenty of water, avoid cold water submersion and heavy sweating the first day, keep the area covered from wind, cold and sun, and skip alcohol. See our full aftercare tips above.
Can cupping help with a cold or cough?
-
In Chinese medicine, cupping is traditionally used to help move congestion and break up phlegm in the chest. Let your provider know if you're recovering from a cold or have a lingering cough.
Is fire cupping right for everyone?
-
Fire cupping is safe for most people, but let your provider know if you're pregnant, take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, or have a sunburn, rash or broken skin in the treatment area so your session can be adjusted.
Let Your Body Move Freely Again
If your muscles have been holding on to tension, stress or old injuries for too long, you don't have to keep working around it. Fire cupping gives your body the space and circulation it needs to release what's stuck, so you can move, breathe and feel more like yourself again.
