Deep Tissue Massage for Pain Relief & Nervous System Regulation
Deep tissue massage is more than working out tight muscles.
When tension has been building for a while, you may notice it in the same places over and over again. A tight neck. Stiff shoulders. A lower back that never quite relaxes. Muscles that always seem to be bracing.
Deep tissue massage uses slower, more focused pressure to work with areas of deeper muscle tension and connective tissue. At Nalu Healing Arts, we combine this approach with a broader understanding of how stress, movement and the nervous system can affect the way your body holds tension.
Your session isn't a set routine.
Your practitioner adjusts the pressure, pace and techniques based on what your body needs that day.
The goal isn't to force your body to release. It's to give it the space to let go.

What Makes Our Integrative Deep Tissue Massage Different
At Nalu Healing Arts, massage isn't a rigid menu of techniques.
Deep tissue massage is one part of an integrative bodywork session. Your practitioner may blend different approaches throughout your appointment depending on what your body needs.
We don't just focus on where it hurts. We look at the bigger picture and how your body has been holding tension.
We look at the bigger picture and how your body has been holding tension.
Going Deeper
Some areas need more focused work.
Slow, deliberate pressure can be used to work with deeper areas of muscle tension and connective tissue. Myofascial release and trigger point work may also be incorporated when areas feel particularly restricted or sensitive.
But deeper doesn't always mean harder.
Your practitioner pays attention to how your body responds and adjusts the pressure and pace throughout your session.
Mind-Body Connection
Your body and nervous system are always communicating.
Stress can show up physically as tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, shallow breathing, or muscles that never seem to fully relax. Physical tension can also make it harder for your nervous system to settle.
Our approach considers both.
By combining therapeutic massage with nervous system-focused bodywork, we create space for your body to slow down and release tension.
Trauma-Informed Care
We work with your body, not against it.
Our approach is informed by an understanding of how stress and past experiences can affect the way the body responds to touch, pressure, and release.
We pay attention to your comfort and communicate with you throughout the session. If something doesn't feel right, we adjust.
What Your Customized Session May Include
Each bodywork session is tailored to your needs. Depending on what your body needs that day, your treatment may include a combination of the following:

Deep Tissue Massage
Slow, focused pressure is used to work with areas of deeper muscle tension.
Deep tissue techniques can be helpful when tension feels persistent or when you're looking for more focused work than a traditional relaxation massage.
Your practitioner adjusts the pressure throughout the session based on your feedback and your body's response.
Myofascial Release
Myofascial release uses sustained pressure and gentle movement to work with the fascia and connective tissues surrounding the muscles.
This approach may be helpful when an area feels restricted or when tension affects the way you move.

Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger point work focuses on areas of concentrated muscle tension that may contribute to discomfort in other parts of the body.
Your practitioner uses focused pressure while paying close attention to how your body responds.
Swedish Massage
Not every part of your session needs deep pressure.
Swedish massage techniques use longer, flowing strokes and gentler movements to warm the muscles, encourage relaxation, and help your body settle.
These techniques can be blended into a deeper bodywork session when appropriate.

Prenatal Massage
Massage during pregnancy requires a different approach.
When appropriate, your practitioner can adapt bodywork to support comfort and changing physical needs during pregnancy. Your practitioner will discuss positioning and pressure with you before treatment.
Bodywork Integration
Your session doesn't have to stay within one technique.
Your practitioner may move between deep tissue massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, Swedish massage and other hands-on techniques as your body responds.
This is what makes the experience integrative rather than a fixed massage routine.

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage may help you feel more comfortable, relaxed and at ease in your body.
Depending on your individual needs, you may experience:
Less muscle tension and stiffness
Relief from everyday aches and pain
Improved range of motion
A deeper sense of relaxation
Greater ease of movement
Support for recovery after physical activity
Reduced stress and physical tension
Greater awareness of how you hold tension
The goal isn't simply to feel better for the hour you're on the table.
It's to help you understand your body's patterns and create more space for change.
As a new patient, you have extra time with your practitioner for a comprehensive consultation and a 1-hour treatment.
We'll talk about what you've been experiencing, where you're feeling tension or discomfort, what you've tried before and what you'd like to get from your session.
From there, your bodywork is built around you.
Your practitioner may begin with lighter or broader techniques before moving into deeper work. Pressure and pacing can change throughout the session based on your body's response. You don't need to know which technique you need before you arrive.
Just tell us what you're experiencing. We'll start there.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Frequently Asked Questions
Is deep tissue massage painful?
-
Deep tissue massage can feel more intense than a relaxation-focused massage, but it shouldn't be unbearable. Your practitioner will communicate with you throughout the session and adjust the pressure as needed. More pressure doesn't always mean better results. If your body starts bracing against the work, that's important information. Let your practitioner know so we can adjust.
How often should I get a deep tissue massage?
-
It depends on your body and what you're coming in for. Someone dealing with ongoing muscle tension may have different needs than someone looking for occasional support after physical activity. Your practitioner can help you determine what makes sense based on your goals and how your body responds to treatment.
What is the difference between Swedish massage and deep tissue massage?
-
Deep tissue massage uses slower, more focused pressure to work with deeper areas of muscle tension. Swedish massage generally uses lighter pressure and longer, flowing strokes. It's often used for relaxation, stress relief and general muscle tension. Your session doesn't have to be one or the other. Your practitioner can blend techniques based on what your body needs.
Can deep tissue massage help with chronic pain?
-
Massage may help reduce muscle tension and improve comfort and movement for some people experiencing chronic pain. Because chronic pain can have many contributing factors, your practitioner looks at more than the painful area and considers the bigger picture.
What should I do after a deep tissue massage?
-
Give yourself some time to slow down after your appointment. Gentle movement, rest and hydration can be helpful after bodywork. Your practitioner can also provide aftercare suggestions based on your individual session. Some people experience temporary tenderness after a deeper massage.
Can I add anything to my massage session?
-
Your bodywork session is customized to your needs. Talk with your practitioner about available add-ons and other Nalu Healing Arts services that may complement your treatment.
